What are you building in there?

It’s disconcerting to pass a shop that’s been there for 5, 10, or twenty years to find that the business has shut down. There’s no sign saying it’s moved to larger, more convenient premises. Anything of value has been ripped out. Only a few items remain: a half filled rubbish bin, some dust, some ancient stock not even worth taking.

After all the energy that has been injected into the business, there is nothing left to show for it. No asset worth selling.

Each time I pass a shop like this it always begs the question: Are you breathing life into a business that may grow up to have a life and inherent value independent of you, or are you simply paying rent on a job?
